What is the best adhesive for gluing metal to wood?

I am making a project for Fine motor skills. I will have screws through a piece of wood. The patient will put wingnuts on the screws. I thought it would be good to put some sort of adhesive to attach the screw to the wood on the backside. What is the best adhesive for gluing metal to wood?

Hi, Jeanette, I think I know what you're talking about because I've seen other patients doing similar when my wife was having some therapy.

First, the issue at hand. I doubt adhesives will help. The screw / bolt will still probably wobble in the hole thru the wood making it harder for the patient. Accidental pressure on the protruding end will likely break the adhesive bond.

Why not try this. Use a screw/bolt a little longer than desired. Get a ';Hex'; nut the same size as the screw. Insert the screw thru the hole in the wood, then ';screw on'; the hex nut onto the other end until the whole assembly (screw, hex nut) is very tight so that there is no wobble and it cannot be turned. You might need a pair of ';pliers'; to do this. If you're not comfortable with it, ask around and I'm sure you will find someone glad to help.

End result: You will have a hole in a piece of wood with a screw/bolt going thru it. One side will have the ';Head'; of the bolt. The other side will have the threads showing with the ';hex'; nut holding it firmly in place but enough threads showing for your patients to work with.

Use a screw/bolt long enough to leave enough threads for your patients to work with (no interference from proximity to the wood, etc.).

One other thing. Machined screws, bolts, nuts, wingnuts, etc., are not always perfect, especially not the variety found at local hardware stores. Before using, try them yourself. Be sure that ALL of the wingnuts and ALL of the screws fit together easily. Discard those that don't go on easily.

Your patients do not need mechanical interference. If you know someone handy, they may be able to file a ';lead'; on the thread end to help patients get the wingnut ';centered'; before trying to screw them on.

If I read your question correctly, this oughta help and last a while. Noble cause. Best to you and your patients. Keep doing good things. Thank you.
I assume you can get araldite in your part of the world, its a two pack adhesive that you mix together and goes off like you are not going to get it apart again.Just need to put some behind the head of the screw and the top few threads as you put it into the wood then put the wing nuts on till set, make sure you dont get it on the nut ends of the tread or you wont get them off.
