What is a good adhesive/glue for broken PVC pipes?

I accidentally hit one of the sprinklers in my garden with my weed whacker a few days ago. It sent the top half of the sprinkler flying, but I found it after some searching. Apparently the whacker cut straight through the PVC pipe, but luckily the sprinkler itself is intact. The problem I have now is that replacing the pipe would probably take a lot of digging, and I was wondering if it's possible (and advisable) to just glue the part that was cut off back together. Is this a good idea? And if so, should I sand both parts down first or just match them (it's a pretty clean cut except for one jagged section, but the jagged section is present in both of the broken pipes, so it fits perfectly). What brand of glue should I use?

Thanks in advance! What is a good adhesive/glue for broken PVC pipes?
tool / material needed:

1ft. pvc pipe ( same dia. as existing)

2 couplings

pvc cleaner and pvc glue

pvc cutters, or hacksaw if you already have one

cut bad section of pipe out. de-burr it with a knife if needed to ensure easy fit for new pipe.

glue one coupling on new pipe (after using pvc cleaner).

determine new length of pipe needed, and cut to size.

glue remaining coupling on other side of new pipe.

clean old pipe with cleaner, and glue both sides of new couplings and old pipe, and connect.

ALWAYS CLEAN AND GLUE BOTH PIECES, male and female,..... FEMALE FIRST. pressure test before you fill in the hole. What is a good adhesive/glue for broken PVC pipes?
You can't glue the pipe back together, period. If there's enough room, there's a sleeve that you can use to mend the pipe with pvc glue. Note that pvc glue really isn't glue at all but a solvent that melts the pipe so you should never use too much. Here's a link to show parts that you might need. http://www.plumbingsupply.com/quick-repa鈥?/a>
cut the pipe on either side of the break, buy PVC cleaner and glue (purple stuff), buy a fitting to fit in the space, and bada bing, youre done.

never patch PVC.
Unless you can find a coupling to fit the pipe, dig down and replace the whole unit. You will regret trying to 'patch'; it.
