What is the best adhesive to glue cut canvas onto a stretched canvas?

I'm working on a painting and would like to glue painted pieces of cut canvas onto a stretched canvas. I'm not sure which adhesive would be the best and longest-lasting choice.

Help. What is the best adhesive to glue cut canvas onto a stretched canvas?
Rabbit skin glue, find it in powdered form at art stores.

It's archival, too.

It has been awhile since I've glued canvas to canvas, ask the clerk (make sure you're at an ART supply store not Hobby Lobby) tell them what you're doing and if there are any new archival glue products on the market.

Don't use: Rubber cement, Elmer's, silicone, they dryout or crack.

most likely rubber cement.
If you are using acrylic paints, you can simply stick on the cutouts with that paint.

Ditto, for oils use oils.

Also, if you roughen the surface or if it has not been primed (coated) already, you can simply use ordinary white glue. It is archival and very cheap, and reversible. (However, being water-soluble, one would not want to over wet it with water unless you want to remove it).
I use 'padding compound' which is usually used to make pads out of clamped together sheets of paper.

It can be bought in art stores and office supply stores.
